Set up multi-factor authentication

Step 1 of 7

Phone: Not chosen yet

Set up MFA (multi-factor authentication)

Tip: you can revisit any step, or change your phone type, at any time using the controls on this page.

This guide will help you set up multi-factor authentication (MFA) using Microsoft Authenticator, so you can approve sign-in requests from your phone.

Number matching

When you sign in, your computer will show a number. Microsoft Authenticator will ask you to select the same number on your phone. This confirms it is really you signing in.

You will need

  • Your existing username and password
  • Your mobile phone
  • Internet access on both your computer and your phone
  • A screen lock, PIN, fingerprint or face recognition set up on your phone

Approximate duration: no more than 5 minutes.

Privacy

This website does not ask for, collect or store your username or password. You will enter those details directly into the Microsoft sign-in page, not into this website.

Get Microsoft Authenticator

You can install the app now, or wait until we reach the install step later in this guide.

Troubleshooting

I do not have the Security info link

Sign in to your Microsoft 365 account and visit your account's Security info page, or select "Update info" if you are prompted for more sign-in details after signing in.

I selected the wrong account type

Return to the add-account step and select Work or school account.

My phone does not support the Authenticator app

Device or operating-system compatibility may apply. Contact your IT support team for help.

I already use another authenticator app

You can have more than one authenticator app installed. This guide only covers Microsoft Authenticator, which is required for approving sign-ins to your Microsoft 365 account.
